Table Tennis Tournament
USATT Sanctioned
THELMA PARKER GYM
Waimea, Hi.
Video & pictures follow from our 2010 Big Island Tournament. It was a great success with 40 players entered; the biggest yet on the Big Island! Players came from California, Alaska, Maui, Oahu, and of course, the Big Island. 2+ Days of strenuous exciting table tennis was played with players ranging in age from as young as 13 to 75 years young! The only disappointment was.....the weather, as it was very cold on Saturday afternoon and evening, about 55. Waimea is at about 2500 feet and does get cold. We had players camping out in the parking lot....a group of College students from Oahu, Janet, Matt & Tim. They are a great group of students that played well and were very helpful in anything that needed to be done. 13 Year old Noah came from Maui to play and, after only 14 months of playing this sport, has improved a lot. He will be a force in the not too distant future. Billy, Thomas, & Tony from Oahu played very well with Tony again playing strong in the Super Round Robin, before losing to Billy. Billy was a real asset at the tournament, allowing many of the Big Island players to get a taste of high level playing with a different style than some of the better players on the Big Island. Thanks for coming Billy! And the PHENOM, Armadillo from Maui, a fun guy to watch play with his unusual style, had the audience in the palm of his hand until losing to an extremely skillful Clyde. In that match, the ArmadilloMan only hit the video camera 3 times in the next court! He covers a marathon amount of area on each point! So much fun to watch and he is the nicest guy with a GREAT attitude. The Open Elite Final was a repeat from the November tournament, going 6 games, but with Yen besting Clyde this time. Those 2 have played each other more than 100,000 times in the past decades so it's anybody's guess who will win each match. It was a nail biter till the end. Based on the umpire's proximity to the match, it is good for Yen it didn't go to 7 games as endurance would really have come into play. Dinner for all on Saturday night was FANTASTIC! There was so much food. Thanks to all the Big Island players for bringing a side dish or dessert. The Chicken Hekka was delicious and I heard from many that it was one of the best local dishes they ever had. Thanks to my wife Debbie, John Romoa, Gloria, and Jamie for getting food ready for all to enjoy. I never heard such utter silence as I did when dinner was ready and everyone had their food. My thanks goes out to all the players that entered the tournament and especially to those that made long trips to get here. Thanks to my co-tournament director, John Romoa for everything he does which are too numerous to mention. Many have given me compliments for igniting the spark to grow this great sport in Hawaii, but without John Romoa, my efforts may never had started at all. I also want to publically thank Clyde Young. He is the first player on this island I ever knew, back 8-10 years ago when he visited Phoenix and played at my home. It's somewhat his fault that I always thought of moving to the Big Island due to table tennis being available there. He always has great ideas for expanding table tennis in Hawaii, and is a very good player. My thanks also goes out to David Backus for driving 2 tables from Kohala to Waimea and to David Ebrahimi for helping to load and unload the tables in Kohala. Thanks to Lesi, as always, for all his help in every facet of the tournament. Thanks to everyone that helped clean up all the mess and I apologize in advance for anyone I left out thanking....I look forward to June, the USATT Sanctioned Aloha State Games in Oahu, which should be another great table tennis event, and our next tournament on the Big Island in November. ALOHA
