USATT Sanctioned Table Tennis Tournament
Sponsored by LSW Consulting, Inc, Table Tennis & More, Hawaii County Parks & Recreation, & The Waimea TTC
Thelma Parker Gym, Waimea, Hawaii
Wrap-up Article:
Another fantastic and successful Hawai'i Island Table Tennis Tournament has passed. We had almost 40 players ranging from no rating to almost 2000, coming from the other Hawaiian Islands as well as from 4 other Mainland States. This tournament was at the Thelma Parker Gym, in Waimea, the center of our enormous Island. It's elevation is about 2500 feet with cooler weather and lower humidity than other parts of the Island. A big thank you goes out to Hawaii County Parks & Recreation for allowing us to use this great facility. Also, I want to thank John Romoa for his very hard work in moving tables, using his truck, putting up curtains, bringing food & water, keeping players happy and even getting to play some matches. Thank you Lesi Sekona for also helping to move tables with his truck and congratulations on playing so well in the tournament. Thanks also to John Buck and David Ebrahimi for your help in moving tables also. Finally, a big thank you to John Romoa, Lesi Sekona, & Gloria for providing delicious lunches each day for all in attendance.
On to the events.......In the Seniors U-1000 event, John Buck of Waimea defeated David Ebrahimi of Hawi. John has wicked serves which just proved a bit too much for David. I spoke to David after his match and he has sworn never to lose again to John. We'll see what happens in a rematch in the near future. In the Senior's Open event, Allen Kaichi from Oahu was just too much for strong David DeMay from Alaska to overcome. We will hear Allen's name again... There was great action in our Micro Super Round Robin in all the divisions. But in the Championship A Divison, Allen Kaichi defeated Memphis's Reggie Wilson. Reggie tried lots of tactics but Allen was just too strong. David DeMay beat Sunder Young of Hilo in the B Division and Takeo Nakamura from Oahu beat Jeffrey Cumes of Kona in the C Division final. Harley Oda of Oahu proved too much for Jeffrey Cumes in the U-1450 final. In Doubles, that same guy Allen, along with teammate Takeo Nakamura defeated the team of Harley Oda & Reggie Wilson in a hard fought exciting match. Ben Tone of Maui and his unorthodox grip and style defeated the tricky medium pips, lefty unusual gripped Peter Loui of Oahu in the U-1600 final. Up and coming youth, Kalani Fujiyama-Medeiros defeated Frank Miller of Kona in the final of the U-1000 event. If Kalani keeps training, he will be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come. In the unrated event, the consistent winner, Roy Carly of Hawi, defeated Drew Halloway. And, in the Open Elite, that same guy from Oahu, Allen Kaichi defeated the super athletic and exciting to watch, Reggie Wilson of Memphis. Allen's experience and ability to change speed, spin, and location led him to victory. It was a super tournament and we thank all the players for making it so exciting. We all look forward to the next Big Island Tournament loaded with the Aloha Spirit.
