The 2013 Hawai'i Island Open is now history.

The 2013 Hawai'i Island Open was a success, albeit with fewer players than usual. We had a very good Super Round Robin event that had 3 divisions. Youth Noah Clark from Maui won the A Division after some very hard fought matches. Noah also won the Open Singles facing Clyde Young in the finals. Noah played very well in all his matches and had some tough points to make at crucial situations. In fact, in his semi final match against Stephen Freedman, 3 of the games went into deuce. John Romoa from Waimea played very well this tournament, winning 1st place in the Super Round Robin B Division, not losing a single match & only 5 games in his 7 matches. John also won the U-1450 event! Lory Hunter has steadily improved and bested Alaska player, Aporn Stein in the Women's Singles. In the Juniors Event, we separated the 13 and older from 12 & younger juniors. We had lots of good matches with Kai Mantuper winning the 12 & under and Damien Stack winning the older junior event. Damien also won the unrated/recreational event. Damien will be a force in the coming months and years. Frank Miller played great to win the Senior U-1000 event and Stephen Freedman triumphed over a determined Jeffrey Cumes to win the Senior Open. John Buck came on strong to defeat an improved Jamie Stokes in the U-1000 and Ben Tone from Maui defeated Jeffrey Cumes in the U-1600 final. Dan Millare defeated Charlie Kow to win the Super Round Robin C Division. There was some great action and the overall skill level of table tennis has improved much in the past few years.

I want to thank the Hilo Boys & Girls Club for allowing us to use their facilities. Thank you to Don & Karen Fujiyama for all the hard work they do in setting everything up, keeping everything clean, providing cold water, and generally doing all the stuff most players never see that are essential in running a good tournament. THANK YOU THANK YOU. The tournament provided energy bars to all the players and lunch on Saturday & Sunday. Thanks to all the Big Island Table Tennis Association people that brought food for the Saturday Pot Luck Dinner. A good time was had by all. The Aloha Spirit is alive & well. Thanks also to Alaska resident Aporn Stein for helping to umpire a few matches as she recently got her USATT Umpire Certification.

The next couple Big Island Tournaments will be in Waimea; confirmed dates to be announced soon.
