USATT Sanctioned ONE Star Table Tennis Tournament
Sponsored by LSW Consulting, Inc, Table Tennis & More, Hilo Boys & Girls Club, Big Island Table Tennis Association, Old Hawaiian Bed & Breakfast
Wrap-up Article
What a great 2014 Hawaii Island Open table tennis tournament we just had this past weekend! 71 players entered the tournament, a new high for tournaments on our Island. Players came to our beautiful Island from Alaska, New Mexico, Arizona, Washington, Maui, Kauai, Oahu, and of course, from all over the Big Island. We had men, women and juniors playing ranging in age from under 10 to over 80 years of age; truly a sport for all ages to enjoy. We had 4 certified umpires in attendance allowing us to enforce the rules and keep play continuous. We had scorekeepers with scoreboards at each table to allow everyone to know the scores. We had many players participating in their first USATT Sanctioned tournament. Overall, it was a "smashing" success.
Huge thank you goes out to Don & Karen, along with helper Charlie Kow for opening the facility early each day, setting up the tables, keeping the place clean and neat and many other behind the scenes tasks to make the tournament a success. Mahalo to the Hilo Boy's & Girl's Club for allowing our use of their great facility and to Terry for all the assistance in set up of chairs, tables, and more. Thank you to Paddle Palace for supplying the tournament balls; to the Big Island Table Tennis Association (BITTA) for helping to organize the tournament, allowing the use of their tables, and providing lunch on Saturday; to Alex Berganio and the Aloha Table Tennis Association for providing cold water and ice each day; and to John Romoa and Robin Clark for providing their assistance to the Tournament. Lastly, thank you to all the players that participated in making the tournament a success. I apologize for anyone I missed to thank.
All entrants received lots of power bars, energy candy, beef & pork jerky, along with other goodies when they checked in and more of the same was available the entire tournament. The players were treated to a delicious sandwich and salad's lunch on Saturday, along with desserts, fruit and veggie platters along with chicken salad platters for late Saturday snacks, and a variety of pizza for all for Sunday lunch. Due to the donations given by the players and the large number of entrants, the tournament ended up distributing over $800.00 in cash prizes and over $350.00 in trophies. In the 2 Junior's Events, 23 juniors played; and sponsors donated so many prizes that each junior player received a nice prize which was handled beautifully by Karen & Don.
Friday saw the Women's event, with Ruth Dittmar and her long pips winning the Championship, beating Angie Miyashiro, who finished in 2nd place, playing after open heart surgery just a few short months ago! Ruth was one of the break away players in this tournament. Although this was her first tournament as a USATT Member and considered by many to be a very low rated player, she almost beat a 1500 level player in 5 very close games. Congrats Ruth. Another break out player was Charlie Kow, with his anti spin rubber, improving greatly. Charlie won the B Division in the Super Round Robin event and created havoc with his smooth play, beating a 1600 rated player on his way. The players to watch in the future here in Hawaii include Alex Berganio and Christian Menor from Oahu. They both have excellent skills, are improving rapidly, and continue to train at ATTA in Honolulu. Congratulations to Noah Clark from Maui, who just turned 18, for winning the A Division Super Round Robin, and finishing in 2nd place in the Open Elite. There were some outstanding matches like Ben Tone from Maui vs Tim Woollard of the Big Island and Noah Clark vs Yen Wen Fang in the 6 game finals of the Open Elite. As the coach for Table Tennis & More, I want to personally congratulate current students of mine, Tim Woollard (2nd place A Division), Angie Miyashiro (2nd place Women's)(also coached by Clyde Young), and David Ebrahimi (2nd place B Division) for their greatly improved play and continued love of the sport. In fact, as I pat myself softly on the back (OK, maybe not that softly), in the 10 non-junior events, I have at one time or another coached players taking 17 of the 30 trophies.
1st Place winners of the various events include players from BITTA, ATTA, Maui TT, and a player from Captain Cook/Waimea TTC. 2nd Place winners include players from BITTA, Captain Cook/Waimea TTC, ATTA, TT&M, Kona TTC, and Maui TT. It's fantastic that so many clubs are involved and pushing the skill level at the tournaments up and up, here in Hawaii.
Thanks again to all that participated to make the tournament a success and we are all looking forward to 2015 with at least 3 USATT Sanctioned Tournaments here on The Big Island. Hawaii table tennis is growing rapidly with new clubs popping up, including the fast growing Aloha Table Tennis Association on Oahu and the Kona Table Tennis Club here on The Big Island. Aloha!

Please note that the USATT is changing their online software and some players will not show up online due to USATT membership renewal dates. The USATT updates that particular field differently for some reason; but even so, all players below are CURRENT USATT members.
