Wrap-up Article
Although we had a smaller than normal player turnout; this was one of the most fun and exciting tournaments EVER in Hawaii! With David DeMay from Alaska and Mike Meier from California playing; competition was fierce and allowed for the local players to see some different styles and get some real experience with players from the Mainland. What a fantastic learning experience for some of the newer players and many of the matches were so much fun to watch. The Handicap Doubles event turned out to be a really fun event with Mike Meier telling me that he really enjoyed the event and it made him think more strategy that usual. Mike also told me that lunch was the best he ever had at a table tennis tournament. John Romoa played really well, winning the B Division in his first Sanctioned tournament using long pips. Andrew Wessels, the C Division winner continues to improve rapidly and David DeMay recaptured his youth and many of his ratings points (that he graciously donated to Hawaii players a year ago) by winning the A Division in a stunning performance. David Ebrahimi had a breakout tournament with some really good match wins and Jeffrey Cumes gave fits to the other players with his long pips blocking defense and strong forehand kills.
A special mahalo to John Romoa for his invaluable help in setting up the tables, delicious brewing of coffee, and his always great sportsmanship. Mahalo to Debbie for braving all the Cherry Blossom traffic and picking up and delivering lunch for the players. Mahalo to Lesi Sekona for providing all the bottles of cold water and cans of soda, Frank Miller for his chocolate birthday cake, and Steve Freedman for the star fruit. Lastly, thanks to the Waimea Club, North Kohala Club, Captain Cook Club, and the Hilo Table Tennis Club for all your participation and assistance in making this tournament a tremendous success.
