Wrap-up Article

Friday night brought us the one time only, Karen Fujiyama Memorial Women's Open and Aloha State Women's Championship. 12 Ladies entered the event coming from Alaska, Oahu, and The Big Island. This event was in memory of a special lady, Karen Fujiyama. Karen passed a few months back and is sorely missed by all. Karen was a loving, caring, helping, enthusiastic lady, always willing to assist wherever needed. Karen helped the Juniors at the Boys & Girls Club and was so dedicated to the annual tournament for the Juniors, securing prizes for all participants and making sure each and every junior player had a great time. Karen was a unique and great lady that was admired, loved, and respected by all she came in contact with. Some generous donors, outside of the table tennis community, donated money to be given away specifically for this event. It was always Karen's wishes to have cash awards for the Women's Event and this is our way of honoring her memory. All the players in this event won cash prizes and a good time was had by all. Mahalo to the Big Island Table Tennis Association as they brought food for after the event to be enjoyed by all. We had a short special presentation after the Women's Event concluded, with Karen's grandson Kalani giving out prizes and her niece Debbie giving mahalos to all. This is the video taken of the presentation, courtesy of Clyde Young; enjoy.

The 2016 Hawai'i Island Open and Aloha State Championships are now history. 67 total players participated including the juniors from the Hilo Boys & Girls Club. We had a player from Australia, Joshua Yee. I found out during the tournament that he came to Hawaii just to play in this event; Mahalo Joshua for coming to play and being a major part of it. Your future as a player is very bright. So many people contributed to make the tournament a success. Thanks to the Hilo Boys & Girls Club for letting us use their great facility; thanks to the Big Island Table Tennis Association for hosting the tournament, and specifically, to Lory Hunter, Jamie Stokes, Russel Oshiro, Stephen Freedman, Clyde Young, and Gloria Wong for all their help. Setting up the tables, cleaning the gym and bathrooms, ordering and picking up food, then displaying the food and making sure everyone was taken care of an absolute team effort by all of them, and a few more that I am probably forgetting. (Sorry for that). Huge mahalos to The Aloha Table Tennis Association from Oahu. Alex and his crew brought more than 20 players of all ages and skill levels to play and make the tournament a huge success. Also, The Association donated around 20 cases of delicious bottled water and lots of ice. As pictures on this page shows, there was plenty of food for all, great variety, and lots of homemade goodies. Starbucks donated 5 gallons of coffee each day that Stewart & Lory Hunter secured, and John Romoa & Gloria made real Kona coffee each morning. We crowned an Aloha State Women's Champion, Ruth Dittmar; an Aloha State Doubles U-3400 Champion Team, Jian Ping Huang/Jaeho Kim; an Aloha State Senior Champion, Takeo Nakamura; and an Aloha State Open Champion, Carlos Ko. Congratulations to our State Champs, all runner ups, and winners of all the other events. The weather was really good for the tournament with neither rain or wind a factor. All players had a good time, many new players got USATT ratings for the first time, players made new friends, and the Aloha Spirit was everywhere. I don't recall anyone requesting an umpire due to any problems arising. We had 12 ladies compete in the special Karen Fujiyama Memorial Women's Open Event, a record number for our women's event. We were filled with 16 doubles teams and have 28 players in our U-1600 event. Those numbers may not sound much to the reader, but we are located on Hawaii Island, small population, hard destination to come to, and not the cheapest place on earth to visit. But we do have some great attractions like the weather, an active volcano, waterfalls, Mauna Kea (largest mountain on Earth when measured from the base), and of course, the best people and the famous Aloha Spirit. A huge mahalo to each and everyone that assisted to make the tournament a tremendous success and that includes all the players!

Aloha for now.
