Wrap-up Article

The 2015 Hawaii Island Open Table Tennis Tournament is now history and will become an event in Hawaii table tennis history that will long be remembered, ushering in a new and simply exciting time for the sport in Hawaii.

74 players entered the tournament, ranging in age from 7 to over 80. We had 19 players in our 2 senior events, 13 women in our women’s event, and 18 juniors in our 2 junior events. We had 3 players come from Alaska, 1 from Illinois, and 14 from the Island of Oahu’s Aloha Table Tennis Association, plus the cream of the crop, Carlos Ko, now living in Honolulu.

The 3 day USATT Sanctioned 2 Star Tournament kicked off with the 2 Junior events, Friday at 3:30, followed by the largest & most competitive Women’s event we have had. All the juniors playing, received prizes donated by many people, organizations, and businesses in Hilo.

The winners in each age group, Nathan Kwock, 1st & Dylan Helms, 2nd (younger age division) and Kai Mantupar, 1st & Ryan Kunishige, 2nd (older age group) also won trophies & medals. Then, Diann Darnall from Alaska defeated the Big Island’s Ruth Dittmar in a battle featuring Diann’s hardbat vs Ruth’s long pips! We then had the 2 senior events, open and U-1000. Frank Miller defeated Aporn Stein in the U-1000 Seniors, and Tadao Inui defeated Stephen Freedman in the Senior Open. We finished around 10pm.

Players arrived before 8am Saturday for the 40 player Super Round Robin event. There were cash prizes and trophies for 1st & 2nd place in all 5 divisions. Each player played 11 grueling matches. There were some fantastic matches, exciting points, and sweat everywhere. In the top division, although many players gave it a very valiant effort, Carlos Ko was just too strong to defeat and went on to victory, with Stewart Hunter finishing 2nd. It was Takeo Nakamura, 1st & Devin Ortal 2nd place in the B Division, Jeffrey Cumes, 1st & Kyle Higuchi 2nd in the C Division, John Buck 1st & Dean Schroeder 2nd in the D Division, and Diane Fujimura , 1st with Aporn Stein 2nd place in the E Division. And, if that was not enough, U-1450 round robin event followed with Devon Ortal defeating Charlie Kow in the finals; followed by 2 divisions of Doubles! The team Jian Ping Huang/Devin Ortal defeated Miao De Feng/Alex Berganio in the A Divison and the team of Jeffrey Cumes/Bradley Parker defeated Apron Stein/Diann Darnall in the B Division final. We finished play at an early 11pm!

Sunday at 8am, players arrived for the final day of competition.  We started with the unrated event; with Nathan Kwock defeating Jenny Chow in the final. In the prestigious Open Elite event, after a few upsets, the winner again was Carlos Ko over Billy Kanae in the finals. Kyle Higuchi defeated Kai Mantupar in the U-1000 final and Jeffrey Cumes defeated Devin Ortal to win the U-1600, in an amazing match. We finished at 5:30pm, in time for many players to make their flights back home.

What an amazing event; an event impossible to achieve on our little Big Island of Hawai’i without the assistance of so many volunteers. I wish to thank the Boys & Girls Club of Hilo for letting us take over their gym for 3 full days, Don & Karen for all their tireless effort in putting up the tables, moving them, cleaning, sorting, and so many other tasks…they are truly irreplaceable. A big thanks goes out to the Big Island Table Tennis Association for their providing of water & ice on Sunday and a great late lunch/early dinner on Saturday for all. A huge thank you to the Aloha Table Tennis Association on Oahu for bringing 14 players and helping to promote the sport across all our Islands, along with providing some great prizes for the players.

The tournament provided a pizza lunch to all the players and visitors on both Saturday & Sunday, an unending supply of snacks, power bars, and the like, and bottled water on Saturday. Thank you Tom & Steve for making the food/water trip on Saturday, all the USATT Certified Umpires that helped at many matches and to all the players pitching in to make sure we had a scorer at every match.

I want to give a special shout out to the one and only, Carlos Ko. Not only is he a really good player, but also a great guy. After all his matches and victories, he found a vacant table and the time to hit with at least 10 and maybe more, players. He was helping the lower rated players with their game and imparting his wealth of knowledge on them. Players like that are not always easy to find. He has the ALOHA Spirit and everyone that came in contact with him during the tournament enjoyed every minute of it; yep, even the players that lost to him. A personal mahalo to Carlos for playing and helping to make the tournament an even bigger success.

Thank you to all that participated.
