Mahalo to EVERYONE that contributed to the 2022 Hawai'i Island Open, making it a whopping success. Whether you were a player, a helper by picking up food, preparing food, setting up tables, taking them down, cleaning up, bringing barriers, donating money to the tournament, helping to keep score, or just there to give moral support to the players; Mahalo. The tournament was on schedule almost all the time and sometimes, even a bit ahead. Having the full gym and 8 tables makes a big difference. The work in moving the tables back and forth, the time needed to setup there, and just the complete move from our normal playing location to the Gym is a very tiring and long process. Again, HUGE MAHALOS to everyone that assisted. I can never say enough good words about the work John Romoa put in to make this tournament a huge success. Anyone that doesn't know the reason we had it at the Thelma Parker Gym, as he took control and responsibility to move everything. He and Gloria handled most of the food, with Lesi supporting much of Saturday's lunch. Gloria shredded leftover chicken for Sunday and made the 2 huge delicious salads. Not only that, but John won the U-1600 and the Seniors Open. Congratulations John. There were many first time players, mostly from Maui, thanks to 808pingpong. There were also new players from the Big Island and Oahu. Huge mahalos to The Aloha Table Tennis Club for a very generous donation which assisted the tournament and to the 808pingpongclub for donating funds to increase the prize winnings of the Super Round Robin lower divisions. Mahalo to John for the morning coffee. Congratulations to Carlos Ko and Noah Clark for providing some great table tennis action, coming in 1st & 2nd place in both the Mens Open & A Division of the Super Round Robin. Congratulations to our Women's Open Champion Natalia Gerena-Santiago and runner-up Kiyoko Endo. I hope everyone had a good experience and that table tennis will continue to expand in Hawai'i. Again, THANK YOU ALL for participating, making the tournament a success, and helping to increase the sport in our State.
